Canadian dance-pop artist Jenny Mayhem has finally returned and she’s coming through with grace. Her new single, “Lazy Sunday,” is every bit as much as the title suggests and more: laid-back but kooky and bracingly catchy. What is most striking about “Lazy Sunday” is its genre-taunting confidence. Jenny lures you into the pocket, and wagers the appeal of her strut and the arrangement will make for an earbug in the long run.
It exists very clearly in the pop world, but “Lazy Sunday” has a great jazzy undercurrent that makes it a weird co-worker. The rhythm tilts into a gentle waltz, providing the song with a dreamy sway that’s the sound equivalent of lounging in a hammock on a lazy afternoon. Light guitar melodies sleepily ripple throughout the mix, carrying an inviting blanket that’s soothing, yet sophisticated.
On a few listens, you start to realize “Lazy Sunday” is the type of track that makes you just want to take your time, take a breath, and perhaps even dance barefoot in your living room. It’s breezy, it’s sunny and it’s a bit of a gem of a refresher course in Jenny Mayhem’s talents when it comes to genre hopping but staying tight and right as a classic pop number.
Jenny’s doesn’t so much sing as glide and float and sashay across the track with a voice that’s warm, expressive and full of character. There’s a lightness to her delivery that is quietly mischievous the kind you reserve for close friends you let in on a moment of peace and reflection. If this is what’s next from Jenny, sign us up. If it’s late, and you need to rest your body and mind in the last few hours of a day off, don't sleep on this one. Pour a cup of something cozy, recline and let “Lazy Sunday” whisk you away.
