Ryan Kimp slows things up just enough to allow the heart to catch up with the head. And "Confrontation Pt.2," his new standalone single, is no exception on several levels, an organic sequel to the next chapter in a love story that's as recognizable as an old photograph and shares as much intimacy as a handwritten letter. The track is a lovely way into his world, where memories are melodies and feelings are what matter. He's composing soundtracks to the quiet moments we want to remember, not just songs.
This installment of "I Cry" follows up "California," the EP's opening chapter, and with it, it's clear that Ryan isn't only writing music but is painting an emotion. "Confrontation Pt.2" blankets his mellow, golden-hour guitar tones behind his gently stirring, feeling-lipped voice like a warm and fuzzy Outfitters, the difference being that it's a soft, cozy blanket. There's a quiet confidence to the way Kimp relays his story, no rush, no gimmick, just with sincerity.
Another reason the song is so lovable is that it features an old tape sound, which is fitting given that the new EP is cassette-inspired and a full album is on the way. The track could be something you'd accidentally rip along the seam of your parents' OG collection, were it not speaking directly to today's soul. It's a blatant homage to analogue warmth in a digital age, and it works a treat.
"Confrontation Pt.2" doesn't beat a loud drum for you to listen to; instead, it coaxes your concentration. It hangs with you, forces you to think, haunts you long after it's over. With delicate instrumentation and emotive visuals, the songstruck looks like a movie without overdoing it. Think long drives, beach sunsets, and the bittersweet ache of a beautiful memory you wished you could have stayed. We hope this one makes its way on more playlists eventually, because it certainly deserves it.
