It's expansive in every way possible, stacking gigantic beats, quirky girl-pop samples, and swells of Lemonade's voice, which is more an instrument than any traditional lead. Everything is thick with drama, escalating and echoing until you could swear the credits should be rolling in your mind. It is more than a song, but an experience.
"I made this joint in my bedroom… me, a beat and a feelin, Lemonade remembers. I sat on it for nearly five years until I finally realized that the title was not broken and did not need to be fixed. Patience is a rarity in the current rapid release culture, but that level of patience can be heard in the heart-wrenching and fearless experiments for EVERGREEN.
"Cinema: Director's Cut," her first attempt at self-recording, was born from late-night trial and error, many moments of doubt, and ultimately, experience. With mixed and mastered production from John Burke at Vibe Studios Mixing, a department that harkens back to the DIY baseline version of itself, the song pulses without feeling too polished; it hits that sweet spot many aim for but few hit correctly. It shows that in some cases, the best stories are many years in the making, and sometimes the most powerful art comes from committing yourself to the exact moment that inspires it.
