SA-ROC opens "Free My People" to a united voice

The initial single, "Free My People," by Sa-Roc is a demand for justice and fundamental human rights. He also teamed up with M1 from Dead Prez and Franco-Malian artist Solomane to deliver some powerhouse rap vocals, giving conscious rap what it deserved. The track also features stellar contributions from Nejma Nefertiti and Yasmeen Quintana, threading together a vocal backdrop of resilience and unity.

If "Free My People" strides in the beats and bars of one bird, it is an art whose heart transcends itself. The single, which will donate all of its sales to the humanitarian organisation Clean Shelter, is fronted by Loco, who spent the summer with refugees in Calais. Clean Shelter is a Portsmouth-based charity providing life-saving emergency relief efforts in Gaza, including tents, clean water, and sanitation. And the song, in this way, pays one of our highest compliments: a sincere expression of cool, art as activism.

As always, you can hear Sa-Roc's immense voice as it ties both narratives together with end-to-end lyricism over urgent, yet hopeful, soulful beats. The freedom to resist and what justice demands are rarely tackled in such an intelligent manner as Pedusajack does, all with the eternal proof that socio-political music can be more than musically played out.

Artists wield a unique power to advocate for global solidarity through their craft, and "Free My People" is testimony that one can operate the dials of this power wherever you are, from one corner of the world to another, straight into the ears of those under a jackboot. It is a brutal message to deliver, especially if you want those songs to end up like the drinks in your king-size cup holders: if you don't realize that rhythm and blues or whatever else you decide is not an ideal but an aspirational rallying cry.
