Magdalia sharpens the blur with bold new single "Out of Focus"

With her new single, "Out of Focus," Magdalia shows that pop music can be just as profound as it is catchy. Co-written with Olivia Regueira-Garcia at The Artist Studio Sydney, the song taps into the high-speed, polished bounce of Ariana Grande, Griff, and Dua Lipa, while keeping the inimitable Magdalia edge glinting brightly.

The song draws from deeply personal aspects of Magdalia's life: a disorienting late-life discovery of her neurodivergence, as well as the ghostly childhood memory of witnessing her father go blind. Instead of succumbing to despair, Magdalia paints a sonic canvas that's at once empowering and vulnerable. That's music to make you move, and music that moves you.

"I wanted to write something that felt good to perform but also told a story that was important to me," says Magdalia. That balance is evident, her voice gliding with ease atop the sparkling production from Regueira-Garcia, replete with smooth pop textures that enhance the storytelling without overshadowing it. Some carefully applied finishing touches from Liv Volpe at DownUp Studios bring a crystalline clarity, reflective of the very journey Magdalia describes in the song.

At heart, "Out of Focus" is a book about transformation, about floundering in confusion and discovering meaning in that haze. It's a song that'll ring true to anyone who has ever scrambled for purchase in the midst of chaos. With this release, Magdalia doesn't just present another pop anthem; she delivers a piece of herself, vulnerable and authentic, in a hook-filled package. Magdalia is singing, but she is seeing, even when the view is blurry.
