Slate Blue delivers a fun summer vibe with "Coffee Black"

Berlin-based duo Slate Blue, consisting of Dr. Stef Huber and Dr. Hardy Smieszek, have never been ones to shy away from sprinkling oddball flavours into their stew of music, and their latest single, "Coffee Black," is a prime example that the adages are true; the best ideas are often the simplest by design. Slate Blue has cooked something up here: a summer anthem with a winked eye, a groovy earworm, and a whole lot of juice.

"Coffee Black" is the equivalent of a soft love song that teases the ear from the first sip. The tune comes staggering in casually, like it's easy and romantic. But as the listener starts to melt into a mood, the twist arrives: This is no ballad of a partner, it's a love song to caffeine. Suddenly, the love fits after all, don't we all whisper words of love to that first cup of the morning?

Slate Blue's talent for stacking this kind of humor onto irresistible production is on full display here. It's all constructed around a slick base of deep house grooves peppered with jocular vocals that dance with a nod and a wink. Further mischief is orchestrated by an irreverent cameo appearance from an AI-generated Morgan Freeman, the iconic voice adding one more measure of character to the proceedings.

The reason "Coffee Black" is so refreshing is that it refuses to take itself too seriously. In a music world where heaviness often prevails, Slate Blue serves as a poignant reminder that joy also belongs on the dance floor. This is a song for open windows and sunlit afternoons, for enjoyment with friends and laughter ringing out between sips. "Coffee Black" is more of a vibe than a song, light and charming, yet strong enough to keep you going.
