The story behind “Humbug” is as impromptu as the song itself. Jason McKee accidentally stumbled across a fumbled minor pentatonic scale while rehearsing, which was but metaphorical lightning in a bottle. Within 45 seconds, the entire song came out, written on a studio couch during what was supposed to be a routine six-hour solo session. And that flash of accidental genius turned into a declaration of a crush on a girl who worked in the same studio, the muse for the melody.
