The 1975 Silence Doubters with Swaggering Set at Leeds Festival 2022

Leeds Festival 2022 was far from lacking its share of bitching when The 1975 were shoehorned in as a substitute for last-minute absentees Rage Against the Machine. But if there’s any band designed to shut up naysayers with a whole lot of flash and confidence, it’s The 1975, and last night, they did just that.

Frontman Matty Healy strutted out onstage with all the casual swagger of a rock star who knows he’s got the chops. Swagged out in a suit and tie, cigarette dangling from his lips, trademark smirk glued to his face, he looked less like he was taking over a festival and more like he was inviting us all into his living room. And in a way, he was, because for Healy, this wasn’t just an ordinary gig but was a homecoming of sorts.

With a glance and a nod at the crowd, Healy made sure to bring everyone back to reality, who was just another kid chasing music under the northern sky. The sea of the faithful didn’t miss that withering link, and rocked the fuck out two songs in, memory of their Rage-related grudges long forgotten.

The 1975 performance was a lesson in performance, bravado, and self-confidence. Songs spiraled upward, guitars shimmered, and electricity crackled through it all. Those were more about basking in what was happening than proving anything.
