Emily Chambers pours her heart out into the storm with “I Hope It Rains”

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Emily Chambers transforms grief into achingly beautiful, stripped-down moments, as heard in her latest single, “I Hope It Rains.” Hailing originally from Vancouver, BC, Chambers has developed a sound that sounds both timeless and deeply personal, a soulful pop ballad (this far from known cheesy territory!) to support the theory.

Produced by David Dorn, “I Hope It Rains” is the second track to be lifted from Chambers’ debut album, recorded in Nashville. Built on gentle piano chords and a mournful cello line, the song plays out like a confessional letter being whispered into the gale. Her voice, full-bodied, emotive, and unguarded, channels the rasp of Adele and Emeli Sandé while taking on an identity all its own, delicate but assertive.

At its heart, “I Hope It Rains” is a song about heartbreak in its most raw form — the kind that changes and molds you. The song was written by Chambers in the depths of her father’s fight with Parkinson’s and dementia, as a twofold compass and comfort. When her father died last April, the song took on another quality, a prayer for release. And with soaked and tender lines, Chambers uses rain as a metaphor for grief, a necessary downpour that allows for healing. “I Hope It Rains” isn’t a song as much as it is a place to stop and catch your breath, or perhaps to mourn, or remember. It’s a reminder that sometimes, when our hearts shatter into pieces, the most beautiful thing we can do is let it rain.
