Tackling Leonard Cohen’s “There Is A War” with equal parts reverence and determination, Kaye aimed to craft what she dubs a more “definitive” take. Backed at the piano, she built out the arrangement from there, adding drums and deepening the groove, all under the direction of producer Charlie Chamberlain. Chris Benelli on acoustic drums and percussion brings unbridled momentum, while David Conrad’s upright bass introduces a surprising twist of jazz into the song’s industrial throb. The effect is textured and urgent.
Searing guitars and immersive sonic treatments from Gabriel and Chamberlain only raise the emotional stakes, mirroring the song’s themes of division and devotion. In Kaye’s hands, “There Is A War” is more than just a cover version, it is a lungs-bared statement of purpose, unflinching and alive to the unsettled tumult of our times while defiantly refusing to isolate itself from it.
