Bishop Briggs conjures healing and haunting in latest EP "When It's Halloween"

Los Angeles singer/songwriter Bishop Briggs makes her return this October with a new EP, When It's Halloween, a five-track EP produced by Will Bates. The EP tells the tale of a man born with two shadows long after his twin brother's passing, and was written by Landon Jacobs alongside Sarah McLachlan and Will Bates, who explore the fulcrum between mourning and magic, in a world where love and loss occupy the same haunted space.

"When It's Halloween" tells the story of two witches, Bishop Briggs and her late sister, Kate. With such alter egos as "Witchy and Witch", she channels a world in which grief and imagination are entangled. As leaves change color and nights grow chilly, "when it's Halloween", it still feels like more than a seasonal treat, but it's a confession, a conversation, and a gentle rebirth.

The album captures the peculiar comfort that comes with October nights. The mysticism and beauty of Halloween is that liberating, the concept of being someone else for one night. But under those costumes and candlelight lies something more: the ache of moving on in life without her sister. For Briggs, the metaphor of witchcraft is not one of escape, but of exploration.

Highlights include the mesmerizing "Witchy Witchy," which is akin to a sound ritual, and "Good Witch," a lilting anthem that lingers long after the final note. Over its 11-minute, 35-second duration, "When It's Halloween" feels both intimate and cinematic, a flickering candle next to the darkness of grief.
