Irish all-female alt-rock powerhouse Martina and the Moons are back with their new single “Laundry Mat”. Following their spring release, “Baby Turtle,” the band’s latest. “Laundry Mat” is a fire set ablaze everywhere. It’s written by lead singer Martina McHugh Téllez and produced by Ruadhri Cushnan and Elise Molléat at Camden Recording Studios, with the song capturing ordinary annoyance in a rallying cry. And with Martina Moon’s impassioned vocals atop Sarah Morgan’s agitated guitars, Ruby Levins’s weighty basslines, and Zahira Ellis’s propulsive drums, the band delivers a raw energy that feels equally urgent and unflinching.
The song’s origins are as dramatic as its sound. Martina remembers standing in a laundromat after learning about a domestic violence murder in her hometown, caught between the ordinary spin of a washing machine and the jarring reality of tragedy. That collision, between the everyday and the intolerable, is at the heart of “Laundry Mat.” At its heart, it’s an anthem about the absurdity of living life on autopilot, a call to wake up, feel, and act.
“Laundry Mat” captures the band’s signature live-wire intensity, but it also boasts a lyrical bite that sticks around long after the last chord. It’s cathartic, it’s anthemic, and it is unapologetically alive, evidence that Martina and the Moons are not just a band that chronicles the world around us but also one that shakes the real things awake. On this new release, the Dublin quartet once again proves to be one of alt-rock’s most urgent voices, transmuting life’s seemingly most minor moments into loud, radical calls for change.
